Homeopathy for Long & Short Term Depression

June 20, 2018

As a holistic homeopath specializing in depression among other areas, I tend to see depressive clients almost on a consistent basis, and oddly enough, it is usually a major core or at the very least a severe branch of their overall pathology. Although many people will not treat it as importantly as a chief physical complaint such as migraines or eczema, it is very easily to recognize the depth and underlying critical effect depression can have on a person’s every day life and well being.

This is even more so in our times, as 12% of adults suffer from severe or mild forms of depression per year in developed countries (WHO) and about $80 billion dollars are spent on depression treatments, most of which are suppressive and do not address the root causes of the problem.

Homeopathic Remedies for Depression

I have used homeopathy to treat both chronic and acute depression with a very high success rate. In the vast majority of depression cases, once the depression began to disappear, most other psychological and physical ailments began to recede as well (remember – it’s all connected!).  With homeopathy, people are able to attain the tools and boost they need to regain control of their health and well being and to live a life of more happiness, contentment, and serenity.

For chronic depression, it is proper to seek out the help of a qualified homeopath (such as the author) who will address the person as a whole along with their psychological and physical pathology and choose an individualized homeopathic remedy that best addresses the overall needs of a person.

For acute depression and to get a good grasp of the most commonly used remedies for this condition, the following remedies are definitely ones to consider for acute use. For long term depression, it is best to consult with a qualified professional homeopath as treating longterm conditions requires addressing the whole person for more in-depth, efficient, and more long-lasting care).

Aurum Metallicum – for profound depression resulting from failures, grief, or disappointments where high goals were set but not achieved, and the desire for suicide is very strong.

Natrum Muriaticum– for depressed, reserved individual dwelling on past disagreeable events that crave a personal connection with others and crave salt.

Cimicifuga– a wonderful women’s remedy that is wonderful for postpartum depression and depression during the overall childbirth process. Women needing this remedy will feel bogged down by a cloud of negativity or negative energy.

Ignatia Amara– a great depression remedy for those reacting hysterically to disappointed love or grief. People needing this remedy may also experience nerve pain and spasms and tend to be emotional and judgmental while in this state of being.

Natrum Sulphuricum– for grief stricken, melancholic, and depressive individuals that are serious or very reserved individuals. They have an urge to commit suicide but won’t carry it out out of a sense of duty to family. They may feel happier after using the restroom.

Phosphoricum Acidum – consider this remedy when there is depression along with strong apathy and indifference to everything. A person needing this remedy will feel dead inside.

Staphysagria– for depression that results from indignation and suppressed anger, which may be accompanied by excessive sexual self-pleasuring, urinary complications, and self reproachment.

Cygnus cygnus– this remedy is well indicated for very intense states of depression and heart wrenching grief. The person needing this remedy cannot imagine being able to move forward. They may view themselves as outsiders and may experience uncomfortable lump sensations in the throat as a result of their depressive or grief stricken state.

This is certainly not a full list of homeopathic remedies for depression, but it’s definitely a good start to understanding homeopathy’s unique holistic and natural approach to treating depression.
